Women in Coorg are so enterprising, I have been saying it all along. I experienced it myself only in the past 15 years, with my mother and other relatives regularly placing food orders with bakers and cooks in Coorg, we have had our tummies and hearts full through the years. Engagement starters, Wedding desserts, Naming Ceremony snacks, Birthday cakes and Evening tea cakes, the list of the most delicious sweets and snacks that can be made by these talented women is endless.
Some History
This goes back to the whole concept of 'Tea Time' being a big affair in Coorg.
Coorg is a coffee growing district, however tea is served and consumed at large. More than coffee was and is. Tea time in Coorg was heavily influenced by the British, the whole concept of holding a teacup with saucer was a matter of pride and refinement for Coorgs. Their habits and recipes rubbed off on us. Over the years till today women in Coorg have taken pride in baking cakes, biscuits, quiches, pies; preserving homemade wines, liqueurs, pickles and butter; or to that matter making scones, fudges, souffles to name a few.
Tea Time is a very significant window in in the day of a Coorg, it involves an elaborate spread with dishes that are wholesome and feel like a dinner spread. Preparations start hours in advance and the thindi menu or snacks are planned days before. Thindis usually consist of murukus or what we call chakkulli, chirotti, niputt (these are influenced by recipes and verisons of neighbouring states). Accompanied with the English snacks or tea cakes. There also usually traditional curries (like a chicken curry or mutton curry) served with a rice cake accompaniment.
