Chow Chow Recipes

Writer's picture: Sitara CariappaSitara Cariappa

Here are a couple of recipes for Chayote or Chow Chow as they call it in Coorg. I am not sure if this is a native vegetable to Kodag but this is popularly used and cooked. I, however have never cooked this before. These are recipes that we received from some of our followers at The Drunken Pig, each with their name under it. I thank you once again for it.

CHAYOTE CURRY

by Parvathi

Peel the skin. Chop into medium pieces. In a vessel, add mustard seeds, curry leaves, cummin seeds, green chilli, chopped chow chow, little water ( till the vegetable it almost covered) cook it on medium flame and keep stirring occasionally. When it's almost cooked, add fresh coconut, turmeric, salt. Cook it for sometime.

CHAYOTE STIR FRY

by Seema P Ramu

Chop the chow in cube size, soak Bengal gram for some time and pressure cook it for one steam, in a pan add oil for tampering, add sesame seeds, Urad dal, curry leaves, green chilly, add chow chow and cook for 5 minutes, after chow chow softens, add cooked Bengal gram, add salt and add shredded coconut! And it’s done. Most simple and yet very versatile South Indian dish. Best served with dal rice!!
